Mt Lawley

You too can live the Mt Lawley Life

Right on the city’s doorstep, Mt Lawley has charm with an urban edge and real diversity. From Art Deco buildings, gorgeous Federation homes, character cottages and stylish modern apartments, there really is something for everyone’s taste and budget.

Beaufort Street is Mt Lawley’s main artery leading from the city to the heart of Mt Lawley and through to Inglewood and beyond. The Beaufort Street strip is a beautiful fusion of small speciality shops, cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques a plenty. On Beaufort you can buy everything from urban grunge clothing to a handmade wedding gown, designer home wares to a loaf fresh from the oven or gourmet ingredients for that special home cooked meal.

With so many lifestyle features, it’s not surprising that Mt Lawley is popular with so many demographics.  Families and the fitness focused love Hyde Park with its playgrounds, picnic areas and walking or running tracks.  The Astor Theatre hosts many must-see acts that come to Perth and there is the very popular Mount Lawley Blowing Club and the Golf Club.

Mt Lawley is well serviced by public transport including direct train and bus services, and is home to a number of excellent schools. The suburb has great public amenities making it equally popular with professionals, families and social singles.

Mt Lawley’s diversity is demonstrated by its demographic mix which includes 20% of residents under the age of 19. The largest group (69%) is 20- 64 and over 65s represent 11% of the population.

With just over 32% of Mt Lawley homes listed as occupied by singles, couples represent 50% of households and 30% of households have children.

Mt Lawley Primary and St Paul’s Primary cater for younger children. Mount Lawley Senior High School offers special placements in Languages, Visual and Performing Arts and Music. Perth College is a private school for girls which takes both day students and boarders and caters from Kindergarten right through to Year 12. TAFE, Edith Cowen University Mt Lawley Campus, the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and the WA Ballet call Mt Lawley home.

Additional information

With a history stretching back to the days of early settlement, Mount Lawley was formally established in 1901 and was named in honour of Sir Arthur Lawley, the Governor of Western Australia from May 1901 to August 1902.

Today Mt Lawley is a popular inner city suburb bounded by leafy streets that are largely characterised by Federation and Colonial style homes with some fine examples of art-deco and Californian bungalow styles.

The majority of houses are single detached dwellings of brick and tile construction on large lots. There are also some group and multiple unit developments dispersed throughout the suburb, particularly around Beaufort Street. Many of the older character homes have been renovated and preserved.

Add this history to proximity to the city and the banks of the Swan River with parks and cycle tracks, the vibrant Beaufort Street precinct and great amenities, it’s easy to see why Mt Lawley is one of Perth’s favourite inner city suburbs.
